Landon’s Senior Photo Session in Urban Portland

Landon’s mom contacted us not only to take his senior pictures but to add in a brief family photo session for them too. So we went to some of our favorite urban and industrial locations within the Portland (Oregon) area. Landon was wonderful to work with as was his entire family. The entire session for everything lasted about two hours and we finish just before the Northwest rain began to fall. He is a graduate of Estacata High School.

Happy First Birthday Evan!

It has been some time since my last post on this little fellow, our grandson Evan, but he has no lack of coverage from family on Instagram and Facebook. Today we are excited to celebrate his first birthday!

So I just wanted to share a few favorites we took from his (somewhat abridged) photo session. Your comments are always welcomed.

The Kate White Band

This is the Kate White Band and it’s my first attempt at photographing a musical group. I’ve known Kate (aka The Violin Lady) for quite a few years now. She is an extremely talented singer/songwriter with two albums to her credit. Although she is the lead person of the group, Kate is not one to have everything focus on her, she sees a bigger picture. Her vision is to share her music and faith to encourage others. One of the things she has done to that end is to perform in our prisons; currently she has been to every prison in the state of Washington, impressive to say the least. Supporting her is a very talented group of guys which she has brought together; Glenn, Robert, Dale and Scott. In an effort to promote the vision of the group I decided to donate my time and talents to create these images.

When I initially talked to Kate about the photo session it was nice to hear that we shared the same vision for the look she wanted. She describes their music as a mixture of Folk Rock, Celtic and Bluegrass. So I started out by contacting a long time friend of ours who had a 100 year old barn. It just seemed like it would be an appropriate place for their style of music. I had a lot of ideas and made over a dozen sketches with subject placement and lighting options. I certainly had more ideas than I had time to implement.

Over the three hours photo session I was impressed on just how easy everyone was to work with.  It was great having them practice as they waited for me to set up some of the shots. It was a nice fringe benefit!

Regardless of your musical tastes I’d suggest you check out her web site to sample her unique sound. You’ll realize it’s more than just music, it is “Music That Matters”.

I also want to thank my daughter Amy who assisted me as our stylist. She was a great help and influential in the vision of some of these final images. Many thanks also to Magenta Theatre for the use of some of the props shown here.

A Very Happy Mothers Day!

These are photos taken of our daughter’s one month old son Evan.

I’ve heard for some time now that there is nothing like having your own grandchild. Just like so many things in life you hear from others you cannot really fully comprehend it until you are actually there yourself.  Well, I am there now, and it is just an extraordinary place to be.

Not only is Evan such a blessing to us, but we feel doubly blessed that he has two wonderful parents to raise him. So here is wishing our daughter a Very Happy Mother’s Day!

Waiting on Evan – A new life ahead.

These images are of my daughter Amy, and her husband Karl, who are expecting their first baby (Evan) in April.  The blue  shoes in the second photo were worn by my son when he was a baby and now have been gifted to Evan. As I was doing some of these photos I was reminded of taking ones when Amy was just a baby. I feel very blessed to be part of this next step in her life as she now becomes a mom; it is certainly an exciting time for us all.

Engagement Photo Session – Nick & Gabriele

If you are a parent, then you know that photos of your children hold a special place in your heart. Nick is my son, and later this month he will be marrying Gabriele, who we have come to love equally well. Many times I’m asked if I will be taking the photos of the wedding. I always answer – “No, because I want to enjoy the day as a parent, not as a photographer”.

Nick proposed to Gabriele at “The Old Church” in Portland so we started their photo session there and did some more around the Portland / Vancouver area. You can see a photo session we did for them last year here, before they were engaged.

Patrick and Janene – Movin’ Out

These are photos from an open house party we did for our good friends Patrick and Janene who will soon be moving to Washington DC. Their Airstream trailer is one of their favorite possessions, and as a photographer I was immediately drawn to it. I love retro stuff. For me, it conjured up their travels and moving away, so it seemed appropriate to take some photos by it. Janene later told me that some of the images looked like an album cover and that they were country rock stars….Cool.

Below are some of the friends and family who came to wish them well. Patrick and Janene are such a wonderful and fun couple and we will miss them dearly. We wish you all the best in your new journey!

The MacNab Family – 2009

Although we have known Bob & Vernageen for over twenty years this is the first time we have had the privilege to photograph them as a family. Bob was a local radio announcer for many years on KWJJ radio and I always enjoy hearing his rich mellow voice, what a gift.

Here is what they wrote us after seeing their images –
“What GREAT photos! Gary’s imagination and ideas added so much. Only one problem. There are so many wonderful photos it is really difficult to choose the ones we want. Thanks to you and Karin for making the time together so memorable.” – Bob & Vernageen.

What a wonderful complement. This is what we strive for on every photo session.

One of my favorite subjects – Amy

When you’re the daughter of a photographer you’ll most likely never have a shortage of pictures of yourself. The downside is that you may be asked throughout your life to pose and sit patiently for pictures because your dad has to test out a new lighting setup.

Fortunately our daughter Amy, now 25, wasn’t jaded by the experience. This photo session was at her request. It was a lot of fun and we were all very happy with what we came away with. Amy is expecting in March so we’ll have a brand new subject to work with, but no more testing – I promise.

Corey & Lauren – Engagement Photo Session

We did this photo session as part of our wedding gift for two great people Corey and Lauren. They are best friends with my son Nicholas and his girlfriend Gabriel. Corey is an extremely talented musician and the son of Bill & Jaynie Roberts the founders of Magenta Theater here in Vancouver, WA.

Corey proposed to Lauren at New Heights West and this is where the will be married today July 11th. 2009, so it seemed fitting to do their E-session there too. Here’s wishing you guys all the best in your new life together.
